JiveX Mobile and JiveX Web

Access your data, anywhere, anytime

The rapid availability of information, regardless of your location, is indispensable for improving the medical workflow and hence ultimately also the quality of care. Mobile terminal devices, which are also increasingly employed in the medical sphere, contribute greatly to this. Calling up diagnostic image data on a tablet PC, for example, makes a consultation at the patient’s bedside easier for the doctor and the uncomplicated review of diagnostic information, regardless of the user’s whereabouts saves travel and hence time.

But not just the demand for a rapid, secure and flexible exchange of information within the one facility is increasing. Cross-institutional communications solutions are also sought, which will simplify transfers from the in-patient areas to the out-patient areas (and vice versa), for example, by means of faster and more secure data transfer.

From a technical viewpoint, concepts for the use of mobile terminal devices or for cross-institutional data exchange can quickly become very complex, particularly, for example, when additional software or hardware components are required, which must be integrated into the IT infrastructure. A lack of interoperability with the available systems (HIS, RIS, PACS) also becomes a real problem in practice, and this noticeably reduces the benefits of the new lines of communication. And, if nothing else, compliance with strict data protection guidelines must be reliably guaranteed for medical data.

With JiveX Mobile, the solution for mobile terminal devices, and JiveX Web, the desktop version, these problems do not arise. Both solutions are entirely web-based and can be operated without additional hardware or software. JiveX Mobile and JiveX Web are also manufacturer-independent and can be integrated into any IT architecture.

Flexible application thanks to manufacturer-independence
JiveX Mobile and JiveX Web are based on HTML 5, a technology that allows access to the application via any browser, regardless of whether you use a desktop PC, a laptop or a mobile terminal device. Currently, iOS is authorized for the latter; the approvals for Windows and Android will follow gradually.

No software installation is required. The program is entirely web-based and can be run as a stand-alone application or integrated into a mobile HIS application. Thanks to the platform’s flexible and open design, this approach can be realized regardless of the HIS manufacturer, and specialized medical systems can be dovetailed seamlessly into the architecture.

Thanks to the linkup with the HIS, users benefit from centralized access to all patient-relevant data using just one system.

Both solutions can also be employed in combination with in-patient PACS installations by other manufacturers. Hence, existing PACS solutions can be easily augmented using the mobile JiveX components, for example, when the PACS user is unable to make an adequate concept for mobile image management available.

Guaranteed data security

To fulfill the data protection regulations for patient-related information, it must be guaranteed that the patient data are not removed from the secured server of the institution acquiring information. Likewise, it must be guaranteed that each user is only able to examine the data pertaining to the patient he is treating.

For this reason, JiveX Mobile and JiveX Web are accessed via a web viewer. That is, the data are not held locally on a PC or a tablet PC, but are retrieved from the server of the institution. By allocating access and authentication rights to doctors and referring physicians, and by direct allocation of the image or diagnostic data to the respective user, data protection regulations are also fulfilled with a view toward client management.

User-friendly thanks to optimized management

Operating JiveX Mobile and JiveX Web is extremely user-friendly and can be accomplished with little effort on the part of the IT Department. Thanks to the web-based access, there are no additional maintenance or service tasks; there are no costs for separate hardware or software for external users (referring physicians).

In addition, the HTML 5-based mobile JiveX version is managed using a narrow bandwidth and also enables the physician to access the at times large volume of data on the move or from home with the accustomed speed. Another important plus: the mobile client is specifically tailored for touch operation by hand. So, this is not just a derived version of JiveX, where the mouse functionality has simply been transferred. Instead, the mobile application has been configured so that it is operated using the familiar tapping and swiping movements.

Functional highlights Deep HIS integration and connection to the existing PACS

To design the operation of mobile terminal devices in the medical context as usefully as possible, the maximum patient information should be made available with as few as possible finger taps. To meet this requirement, JiveX Mobile and JiveX Web both have multiple similar strategies.

Seamless integration into the HIS applicationThe advantage of JiveX Mobile and JiveX Web above all is that the application can be integrated on an iPad or on a PC so that the user will not even notice that he is activating a second system. In this case, the user has access to the PACS data in the HIS and then navigates within the same screen. On the one hand, this is very intuitive and, on the other, requires minimal effort since the user does not have to switch back and forth between different applications and views. Of course, both JiveX Mobile and JiveX Web can also be operated as stand-alone applications.

Integration of hospital-wide image and diagnostic information
In practice, the retrieval of further image and diagnostic data, for example EKG or ultrasound data, is also crucial for the success of a mobile viewer. Based on the PACS II strategy of VISUS with JiveX Integrated Imaging, the mobile version also fulfills this requirement and hence goes far beyond a purely radiological application. Here, the users also benefit from the simple linking of JiveX Mobile and JiveX Web with existing systems and archives.

Management without compromise remote from your workstation
JiveX Mobile and JiveX Web are equipped with many functionalities, with which the user is also familiar in working with his local workstation. The management of these functionalities has been programmed for use on mobile terminal devices so that these are available to the user in the typical, intuitive manner. These functions include, for example, windowing, performing distance and angular measurements and zooming in on the image batch or display analyses in an image series preview bar. An image can also be reset to the original display and cut lines can be displayed. The systems also support the display of encapsulated PDFs, multiframe files, videos, PDFs and DICOM EKGs.

JiveX, a secure portal solution
A so-called “demilitarized zone” (DMZ) is the first requirement for a secure and fast communication across installation boundaries. The DMZ describes the zone between the already available firewall and WAN and a second, external firewall. An Apache HTTP server is installed in this DMZ with a JiveX server as the web server and SSL including OpenSSL.

External users then access an HTTP server in the DMZ. Here, JiveX acts as an “intermediary” for the external HTTP server and the internal JiveX server. The information requests are redirected to the JiveX Server via the HTTP server and the address of the internal server remains unrecognizable for the user. The data reaching the outside are encrypted using SSL.

The role concept of the HIS can be used for the access rights, in order to transfer the corresponding call parameters from there to JiveX Mobile. This can also take place via an HIS application.
